Problem with Silverlight patch MS12-016
Posted on February 15th, 2012 at 11:00am
Only a day after release and we appear to have issues with one of the February patches. The .NET / Silverlight patch (MS12-016, KB2668562) throws an error saying it could not be installed - however at this stage it looks like it does actually install correctly.
Microsoft are aware of it and are looking at releasing an update soon. In the meantime as there was no immediate need to install the patch then hold off until further notice.

February 2012 patches are out

Microsoft released the February Patch Tuesday updates today - it is the usual mix, including the now obligatory IE and .NET patches.
As of this moment you should hold off installing anything offered and see what occurs - more news as soon as we have it.

Ready or not, here IE comes

Whether you like it or not, Microsoft have made the decision to push the latest version of Internet Explorer (IE) via Automatic Updates.
Previously it was offered, but not automatically selected for download and install, but it is now going to be included along with all the regular security patches for your operating system. This means that if you are running Windows XP you will get IE8, Vista and Win7 will give you IE9 and Windows 8 (if you are running the pre-release) will be offered IE10.
Unless you have a compelling reason not to, for example a business web application that only works with IE6, then I see no reason not to upgrade at this time. I would however suggest you install it in isolation, i.e. not at the same time as any other udpates.

All clear to patch

Looks like the current crop of patches isn't causing any major problems, so I would say it is safe enough to install all offered security patches at this time (feel free to ignore anything marked as optional).
As with all things there may be the odd glitch with a patch being applied in a specific scenario, but they should be well documented by now (Google is your friend!), alternatively feel free to contact us @ Support42.

Patch Watch Level 2 - January patches are released
Posted on January 12th, 2012 at 10:38am
Nothing to get too excited about this New Year; the latest Patch Tuesday updates have been released and it is a relatively small bunch, only one (for Media Player and Direct Show) rated as Critical by Microsoft - even then that is only for older operating systems, e.g. XP, - the same update is listed as Important for the newer versions of Windows.
I see no reason to install any of the patches at this stage, no exploits are currently doing the rounds, so hold off on these - and the December patches - for a week or two before looking at installing.
